Gridless Compute – Bitcoin Mining Powering Africa

I first came across Gridless Compute when attending Adopting Bitcoin in Cape Town.

They are an innovative Bitcoin mining company based in Kenya, focusing on extending electricity to rural areas in Africa through the deployment of bitcoin mining operations alongside small-scale renewable energy producers.

The company’s approach is unique as it not only aims to harness the computational power required for bitcoin mining but also seeks to address the significant challenge of energy access across the continent.

That’s a seriously noble task – with over 50% of the population on the continent lacking reliable electricity, Gridless’s projects have the potential to make a meaningful impact on local communities by providing them with much-needed power.

One of Gridless’s key initiatives has been in Malawi, where they’ve tapped into clean, stranded, and excess hydro energy to power their Bitcoin mining operations. This project alone has connected 1,600 families to a remote hydro minigrid in the mountains of southern Malawi, leveraging 50 kW of stranded energy for mining while enabling the local power developer to expand their service to more families.

This example illustrates the dual benefit of Gridless’s model: utilising Bitcoin mining to sustain and expand electricity access in underserved areas, while also ensuring that the mining operations are environmentally sustainable by using renewable energy sources.

Gridless was founded in 2022 by experienced entrepreneurs in the connectivity, infrastructure, and software space in East Africa. Their vision is to serve the needs of energy producers in Africa by electrifying the continent and creating more affordable power solutions for people in rural communities.

Their work is supported by a $2 million funding round led by Stillmark and Block, Inc., which underscores the significant potential seen in Gridless’s approach to intertwining Bitcoin mining with renewable energy solutions for electrification.

They primarily serve as an anchor tenant, financing the construction, and managing the operation of data centers in rural communities, where traditional industrial or commercial customers are not present.

In its first year, Gridless embarked on five project pilots in rural Kenya with HydroBox, an African hydro-electric energy company, three of which were operational by 2024. The company also has plans to expand its operations to other East African countries in the near future.

Gridless’s model is particularly compelling because it addresses two critical challenges with one solution: it leverages the financially viable model of Bitcoin mining to support and extend renewable energy infrastructure in areas that desperately need it.

The electricity generated from these mining operations is first allocated to meet the community’s needs, such as powering containerized cold storage for farmers, battery charging stations for electric motorcycles, and public WiFi points, before being used for Bitcoin mining.

Bitcoin as the energy buyer of last resort is model we’ve seen elsewhere – what sets Gridless apart is their passion to partner with energy producers to optimise both their business model and impact.

This ensures that the community directly benefits from the electricity generated, with the mining operations providing a stable financial basis for the energy projects.
